Lorienblue is a commercial Blueberry grower in Margaret River with first plantings in 1989. Blueberries fruit from late December to March. Last year we sold 95% of our blueberries for an average $19.28 kilogram. They are best fresh but we froze some for the after season demand now sold out. Retail cost of fresh Blueberries in shops (usually at least a week or so older and from interstate) was around double that
Blueberries are a good annual income once established. There is no GST on Blueberries. Blueberry plants specifically tested and suited to the climate and soils of the Margaret River region are now being offered for sale. For the first time we have nursery cloned several thousand of our best Rabbit eye varieties with good qualities and yield. These were struck from fifty selected high quality plants and are now rooted, ready for planting out in this next planting time, winter, June-August 2015.
We are extending our plantings on the farm but also hope to sell most of these to new blueberry growers, small or large. Preference will be given to local farmers and to those requiring 500 or more. Email your contact details or call me for advice. The price depends on how many you need.
There is already immense evidence that Blueberries have very high antioxidant and nutritional benefits. We supply immediately fresh (PYO) which is ideal for these health benefits to have immediate effect. Those nutritional benefits (fresh fruit generally) decrease from when picked (unless frozen within 24 hours). Last year in the ten week season we supplied 30% of our crop fresh graded to selected premium cafes and restaurants in Margaret River and Busselton, 45% to our regular locals PYO (pick your own) group and the rest, 25% at farmer’s fresh markets.
We are promoting the health of the area’s residents by selling our fruit locally first and we would like to see others setting up. Margaret River will have another significant difference and high quality product.
A Blueberry Growers cooperative is planned.
